Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport is located at a distance of about 18 kilometers from the City Center. The airport lies to the west of what is more of an urban area in Shanghai. Hongqiao International Airport used to serve as the premier international airport of the city. But after Shanghai Pudong International Airport came up in the year 1999, Hongqiao International Airport switched its role to be the hub which mostly renders services to the domestic air travels.

Back in the year 1998, Hongqiao International Airport used to handle 2500 flights a week on an average. 28 per cent of these were international flights. In 1999, Hongqiao International Airport had handled about 700000 tons of cargo and over 13 million passengers. Prominent airline services like Shanghai Airlines and China Eastern Airlines are based at Hongqiao Interntional Airport of Shanghai. China Eastern Airlines and Shanghai Airlines are based at Hongqiao Airport and have made sizeable investments here.
