Shanghai's Pudong International Airport started its operations on 1 st October 1999. The airport handles some of the domestic flights and international flights. Pudong International Airport serves as one of the most important in ternational gateways to enter China.
In the year 2006, Pudong International Airport was able to handle approximately 17.15 million passengers on international flights. About nine million of those passengers were foreigners. This was good enough to beat the capacity of Beijing Capital International Airport, which had only handled 12.6 million international passengers.
Pudong International Airport of Shanghai had taken over from Hongqiao International Airport, which used to serve as the premier international airport of the city. The construction of the city was largely based on financial assistance from Japan.
