Shanghai, the eighth largest city of the world is also the largest city in China. Located on the banks of Yangtze River, Shanghai is spread over an area of 2,239 square miles. Shanghai is home to Shanghai Port, which is the largest port in China.
Shanghai's Port is located on the Huangpu River. Shanghai Port has emerged to be the largest cargo port of the world. In the last five years, the cargo handling capacity of Shanghai Port has just double from 200 million tons. The latest figures of the Shanghai Port Management Department have confirmed that in the year 2005, the port of Shanghai handled a processed cargo topping of about 443 million tons. This is more than what port of Singapore does.
Shanghai's Port is a widespread and multi-propose port that supports foreign trade and is highly commercial in purpose. One of the recent additions to the Shanghai port is the Yangshan Islands. Yangshan Islands is the place where a deep water port is being set up. The objective is to build a world class deep water port in Shanghai which would easily accommodate larger ships. Yangshan Islands of Shanghai makes for the perfect location for the construction of this port, as the depth of the water here is more than 15 meters. This makes it the most suitable destination to set up a big port in Shanghai's Yangshan Island. The first phase of the project, which was initiated a few years ago, has been completed in 2005.
