Shanghai Expressways

Shanghai, one of the premier cities of China has developed a widespread and most comprehensive public transport system. The public transport system of Shanghai is largely dependent on the extensive network of Shanghai Expressways.

Shanghai is home to eighteen municipal expressways and six city elevated roads. All six of these city elevated roads are toll free. They are:

Inner Ring Road

Middle Ring Road

South-North Elevated Road

Yan'An Elevated Road

Yixian Elevated Road

Humin Elevated Road

The above mentioned roads are mostly located downtown Shanghai. The elevation of these roads is well above the ground level. The distance between the two exits of the expressways are much longer than that of the city elevated roads. There are restrictions on trucks and some kind of cars against using the city elevated roads. Even bikes and pedestrians are not allowed to use any of the six city elevated roads. The roads have various lanes that are separate from each other depending on the direction it is headed to. This is quite similar to the expressways.

More expressways in Shanghai are in the pipeline. One of them is the proposed expressway that would connect Chongming Island of Shanghai to the urban heartland. Shanghai Expressways have revolutionized public transport in Shanghai and has made getting around in Shanghai much easier.
