Located 50 miles west of Shanghai, China Sex Museum in the ancient small town of Tongli features a huge collection of bronze and ceramic statues that depict human sexuality. The statues in the museum are a chronological evidence of the various phases of sexuality in the past 6000 years of Chinese history.
Most of the collections in this museum were in fact found by Liu Dalin, the founder and curator of China Sex Museum. Established first in Shanghai, Liu Dalin struggled for decades to properly preserve his private collection of over 3700 erotic toys, icons and other stuffs. Due to the financial crunches he had to shift the museum to the peaceful countryside of Tongli.
Some felt the museum would tarnish China's image by promoting sexuality. However this former Shanghai University professor and eminent sociologist was able to silence his critics. He felt the museum would only serve as a testament to the different phases of human sexuality which is anything but vulgar. According to this retired respected professor, his mission is to exhibit China's ancient sexual practices.
Visited by over one hundred thousand people in the past 15 years, the China Sex Museum in the outskirts of Shanghai is a great place to visit.
The museum has 6 branches in China. The locations are Guangdong Province, Shanxi province, Hubei Province among others.
