Founded originally in the horse racing club in 1952, Shanghai Museum was relocated in 1959 to the Zhonghui building. However in 1992 the Shanghai local government allocated land to the museum authority. The construction of the building took three years and the doors were opened for the public in 1996. The museum at present has cultural exchange relationships with other famous museums of the world. Apart from that, education, research and conservation of the relics also form a major part of this museum's activity. With a height of 29.5 meters and spanning across 39,200 meters, the Shanghai Museum building is architecturally elegant. The base of the building is square and the top is round. This symbolizes that square earth is under the round sky. There are 11 galleries and three special exhibition halls in the Shanghai Museum. Stacked with a whopping collection of 1, 20,000 invaluable works of art, this museum also showcases ancient Chinese bronze and ceramic statues. The visitors to the Shanghai Museum often marvel at the rich cultural heritage and craftsmanship of the ancient Chinese. Tickets are reasonably priced. At 20 Yuan you can enter the museum. However at 50 Yuan, you can watch the museum, the Shanghai Art Gallery as well as Shanghai Theatre. This museum should feature on every traveler's itinerary.
