After the first Opium War in the year 1842, Shanghai was opened to foreign trade and soon many foreign settlers settled in the city. Among the foreign settlers of Shanghai, some people of French nationality also settled in the city and it was they who created a district only for them. Frenchtown, Shanghai has been created out of the French district which was once under the control of French colonial officials. Toady Frenchtown has become of the major tourist sites of the city and is considered to be a haven for shopaholics. The whole place is replete with multifarious shops, French colonial architecture and countless cafés and restaurants. The French town is located near the area around Huaihai Lu and the Jinjiang Hotel. The place is dotted with enormous department stores that line the streets of the town along with boutiques and the odd antique shops. Some of the popular sites of Frenchtown are Fuxing Park, the Jin Jiang Hotel, shops beside Huaihai Zhong Lu, the new Xintiandi development and the erstwhile residence of Sun Yat-sen. While touring Frenchtown, you can also visit the Yuyuan Gardens & Bazaar, which is located in near vicinity of the town. This bazaar is renowned for its delicious lunchtime snacks and greenery. One of the major attractions of the bazaar is the Temple of the Town God, which was recently restored and renovated.
