Chongyang Festival is also known as the “double ninth festival” which usually takes place on the ninth day of the ninth month according to the Chinese lunar calendar. It is a celebration based on the philosophy of “yin and yang”, considered as the juxtaposed doctrine of nature. Yin is the feminine part of nature which is considered to be a negative force, while Yang is the masculine and thereby is positive.

In the occidental culture too the feminine forces are considered to be influenced by night fall, therefore, negative. However, the masculine energy is derived from Sun, the day which makes it positive. According to the ideals of Chinese myth, Yin is represented by the even numbers and Yang by the odd number. The word “Chong” means double in Chinese. It is in the ninth day of the ninth month two Yang numbers congregate which might annihilate the Chinese community.
