Shenzhen Museum

The Shenzhen Museum is located at the heart of downtown Shenzhen near the Lychee Lake. It is a comprehensive multifunctional museum the entire facility of which comprises the collection, display and research of cultural relics of international standard. The building is an old castle with a four storey dome structure with elevators. The permanent exhibitions include: Ancient Shenzhen, Recent Shenzhen, Shenzhen Today, and several sociological and cultural series.

The museum shows the film version of the history of the city with the Xiasha community in the Futian district. Although Shenzhen might be a city with a mere 26 years of history, the museum traces the chronology of eight centuries of record up to the Song Dynasty (960 – 1279 AD). Ancient literature housed in the museum is testimony to the fact that the locals of the community of Huang are descended from the Huang community, which dates back to the Spring and Autumn period (770 – 476 BC).

With exhibits in both English and Chinese, the museum uses literary texts, docudramas, and relics to sketch the evolution of specific clans and their lifestyles. Lifelike bronze statues around the museum recreate the life of the residents prior to 1980. Visitors here can also find small-scale replicas of ancestral temples, tombs and ancient Hakka villages.
