If you are looking for a place that has as much culture to offer as modernity,
then the Yangshuo West Street is just the place for you. The Yangshuo West Street
is actually a street in Yangshuo called West Street. In fact, it is the oldest
street in Yangshuo, with a heritage that dates back to some 1,400 years and more.
Of late it has also acquired a new avatar; with the influx of foreigners during
the 1980's, it has become a melting pot of things Oriental and Occidental. Due
to this the Yangshuo West Street is often colloquially referred to as the 'foreigners'
street'. The Yangshuo West Street has a dimension of 1,696 Ft in length
and 26 Ft in width.
Tracing a snaky 'S', the entire length of the Yangshuo West Street is done
up in marble. This is also one of the not so urban places in China where you
will hear comparatively large doses of English in use. The entire length of
the road is filled with shops selling the arts of China, like ceramics, bamboo
wares, calligraphy, paintings, wax-painted linen and a great variety of exquisite
silks and brocades. Aside of these wares, the Yangshuo West Street also dishes
out an array of mouth-watering Chinese delicacies along its route. Rubbing shoulders
with the Chinese eateries and food stalls are a few foreign food joints and
cafes too. The Yangshuo West Street is also a mini learning center from where
you can pick up some skills in calligraphy, cooking, Chinese chess and martial
arts. Located 63 Km from Guilin, the best way to commute the length of the road
is by either taking a walk or cycling down it.
