Egypt Provinces

Egypt has 27 provinces or governorates. A governorate is a country subdivision and is mainly used to translate the Arabic muhafazah. Broadly Egypt is divided into lower, upper, frontier and urban regions.

The upper region of Egypt has 9 provinces naming Aswan, Asyut, Bani Suwayf, Al-Fayyum, El Gizah, Al-Minya, Qina, Suhaj and Al-Uqsur. Among all these provinces Aswan is one of the main popular destination of Egypt. Aswan High Dam that lies just north of the border between Egypt and Sudan is the lifeline of Egypt along with the Nile River. This high dam not only regulates the yearly summer flood of the Nile but also create a water reservoir to prevent famine situation.

El Gizah's present name is Giza and is famous for its world popular pyramids while Al-Uqsur is presently known by the name of Luxor and is also a popular destination of Egypt.

The lower region of Egypt also consists of 9 provinces or governorates-naming Ad Daqahilyah, El-Beheirah, Domyat, Al-Gharbiyah, Al-Isma'iliyah, Kafr ash Shaykh, Al-Monufiyah, Al-Qalyubiyah and Al-Sharqiyah. The capital of Domyat governorate, Damietta is famous for its Guava farms.

Al-Bahr Al-Ahmar, Janub Sina', Matruh, Shamal Sina' and El Wadi El-Gedid are the five provinces of frontier region of Egypt. While there are four urban region provinces naming Bur Sa'id, Al Iskandariyah, Al-Qahirah and Al-Suways. The present modern names of these provinces are Port Said, Alexandria, Cairo-the official capital city of Egypt and Suez respectively.
