Egypt: Do's & Don't

Egypt a Middle Eastern country has a rich culture of Muslim influence along with other foreign influence. There are certain do's and don'ts that to know about Egypt before heading or making a visit.

The very important thing to know about Egypt is its cultural values. As a Muslim country Egyptians give uttermost importance to their religious and cultural limits. So by never try to hurt the sentiments of Egyptians regarding everything especially religion and culture.

Generally Egyptians do not drink alcohol or use drugs and do not eat pork, which is considered as unclean. In addition to these, pornography materials like magazines, photos, tapes or records are considered as illegal and subject to confiscation.

If you are invited by any Egyptian and you make the promise then keep it. Always repay invitations by hosting a dinner in a restaurant. It is a common practice among Egyptians.

Proselytizing is also illegal in Egypt. Foreigners who are actively engaged in converting Egyptians are subject to punishment and have been asked to leave Egypt. Egyptians give first preference to women group as in other countries. But speaking with an unknown Egyptian woman is a breach of etiquette for men section.

Do not offer tips to professionals, businessmen or others who would be considered equal to you. You may seriously offend them by your act. Woman traveling alone is generally safe but if any problem arises than take the help of police or any shop. But don't dare to walk in the desert area alone.

Always keep in the mind that all Egypt mosques are not for public tour. Tourism mosques are separate and are open for the public unless services are not in progress. Always remove shoes before entering any mosque, mausoleums or madrasa. Women must cover their heads and bare arms.

One important thing to know about Egypt is that taking drugs or offering drugs is a punishable act according to Egyptian laws. So stay away from drugs and crime.
