Myos Hormos near the Red Sea is a site of historical importance in Marsa Alam. It had once served as a major port for the Roman Empire in Marsa Alam during the 20AD. The Roman used Myos Hormos seaport as a gateway for establishing trade relationships with India and also East Africa. The port is only 8 kilometers to the north of Quseir.


During the early ages, the Romans sent away as many as 120 ships laden with cargo including precious metals, stones, wine, glassware, pottery and also textiles. In return they received important items such as exotic spices, medicines and also silk and pearl. The port ceased to be significant in the later years but regained its lost glory in the 14th and the 15th century with the rejuvenation of India trade. Also it became a very important gateway for the Mecca pilgrims.


In the present days the Myos Hormos port lies in ruins and all you can see is some remnants of the foundation of the ancient port structure.
