Like most of Egypt the local populace of Sharm el Sheikh speaks Arabic. This is the official language of the country and hence is used by the government officials of Sharm el Sheikh. English however is commonly understood and widely spoken as well. Tourists should have no difficulty in getting along. A number of resorts and other tourist amenities have come up in the city and it is not unusual to catch the owners of these places converse in French, German, Dutch or Spanish. Having said this, it is always helpful to learn a few Arabic phrases such as: Hello – “Ahalan”

Good Evening – “Masa'a AlKair”
Good – “Tayyib/ Bikair”
Hospital – “Mostashifa”
How Much Does This Cost? – “Bikam Hatha?”

It is too expensive – “Ghalia Katheer”
Please – “Men Fadlak” (addressed to men), “Men Fadlik” (addressed to women)
Thank you - “Shukran”
Sorry – “Assef”
Good Night – “Tesbah Ala Kheir”
Goodbye – “Salam”
Do you speak English? – “Tatakalam Inglesi? The citizens of Sharm el Sheikh like most educated Egyptian are conversant with Italian and Russian as well. A passable knowledge of these languages should help you navigate your way on a trip to Sharm el Sheikh.
