Music and Dance in Fiji

The beautiful island of Fiji is situated in the South Pacific. This place is certainly one of the most peaceful places on planet earth. From a vibrant culture to the warmth of the native people, from the gorgeous landscapes to the incredible beaches, everything is found here. And the benevolent climate on top of that is just the icing on the cake. Tourists love being here for thousands of reasons to say the least. Putting light on the culture of Fiji, music and dance in Fiji is the first thing that comes to mind.

To begin with, you will know that Fiji music is essentially Polynesian in character. However, the folk styles are nothing but a fine synthesis of Polynesian and Melanesian traditions. Vocal church music constitutes much of their Folk music while the dances are set apart by the rhythmic beating of drums. Ukulele, guitar, and mandolin are some of the instruments that come into play as far Fiji music is concerned. Home-grown instruments in the likes of lali drums are also played. It is revealed that lali drums form quite an integral part of Fijian culture. Derua is another percussion instrument that comes into play.

Music and Dance in Fiji certainly has a lot of variety in the offering. Meke, is a type of a spiritual folk dance in Fiji. Here it is believed that the spirits possess the bodies as the dancers perform. Women's dele is another sort of Fijian dance where the enemy prisoners are humiliated. Indian music also plays a dominant role in Fijian music whatsoever. Bhajans are quite popular. Harmonium and dholak or drums for that matter are played along with it. Another popular Indian music is none other than qawwali. On thing is for sure, Music and Dance in Fiji has its own charm. They are original and reflect much of the fascinating culture of the land.
