Ratu Sir Lal Sukana Day in Fiji

Fiji is a country in the South Pacific Ocean. Ratu Sir Lal Sukana Day in Fiji celebrates the birth anniversary of its founding Father. Fiji is east of Vanuatu, west of Tonga and south of Tuvalu. The country comprises of about 322 islands, of which 106 are permanently inhabited, and 522 islets. Almost ninety per cent of the population is settled on Viti Levu and Vanua Levu islands. The name Fiji is an old Tongan word derived from the Fijian name Viti.

The Ratu Sir Lala Sukuna Day in Fiji is a national public holiday. It is commonly known as the Ratu Sukuna Day. Its celebration is held every year in the last Monday of May. The Day honours Ratu Sir Lala Sukuna (1888 to 1958) who was the father of modern day Fiji. The Founder's death anniversary falls on 30th May. The week leading up to the Ratu Sir Lal Sakuna Day in Fiji is marked by public celebrations with many events. There is an address from the President of Fiji on the closing day. Citizens also enter
Parliament grounds on the Founder's anniversary to polish his statue.

The Ratu Sir Lal Sukana Day in Fiji honors Fiji's foremost statesman. He was born a Chief of the Bau Royal House, graduated from Oxford, served as a barrister in London, was a part of the French Foreign Legion in World War One and decorated for gallantry. Ratu Sir Lal Sakuna then returned to Fiji.
