Museums and Art Galleries in Avignon
France - Avignon - Paris
There are many museums and art galleries in Avignon, some are dedicated to particular themes. Calvet Museum is perhaps the most famous of Avignon's museums. It was founded by renowned collector Esprit Calvet in 1810. There is a wide collection of 17th and 18th century paintings, 14th and 15th century wrought iron works are also very eye catching. In the Louis Vouland Museum, you will find exquisite and lavish furnishings from 18th century. Petit Palais houses a large collection of Italian Primitive paintings since 1976 AD. They were collected by the Marquis Giampietro Campana di Cavelli of Rome in the 19th century, they were bought later by Napoleon III. Some of the works are really exceptional.
The Museum of Old Avignon is set up in the Popes Palace. It has exhibits from
the Middle Ages, as well as many engravings depicting life at that period and
the transformations in Avignon over the years. The museum is included in Palace
tours.
The Requein Museum is dedicated to natural history. Jean-Henri Fabre had been
the curator of this museum. This museum has paleontological, mineralogical and
botanical collections. It is also a naturalist research center.
