Corsica, France

France - Avignon - Paris

France travel guide recommends tourists to visit the beautiful island of Corsica. Ranked as the fourth largest island in the Mediterranean Sea, Corsica is bordered by Italy to the west; France to the southeast and Sardinia to the north. One of the 26 regions under the jurisdiction of France, Corsica in France is separated from the mainland France by the Ligurian Sea. This island in the Mediterranean Sea has over one thousand kilometers of unbroken coastline. With almost 50 mountain peaks of over 2000 meters each, the topography is in general mountainous. Monte Cinto, the highest peak on the island climbs up to 2706 meters above the sea level. Corsica in France also has 200 pristine beaches. The island sports a Mediterranean climate with warm sunshine persisting for most of the times during the year.

The history of Corsica started more than two millennia ago. The Carthaginians ruled over this 3,350 square mile island up to 237 BC. The mighty Romans then took over and their reign lasted for more than 600 years before the Vandals snatched it in around 430 AD. Subsequently Corsica in France was won first by the Byzantine Empire and then by the Arabs. This island was included in the territory of France in 1768 when the Genoese sold it to the French. The hand over was not smooth however. Under the leadership of the Corsican general Pasquale Paoli, his republican forces fought a tough battle against the Genoese and then against the French. The republican army was defeated and the French took over in 1769. Corsica is famous for being the birthplace of Napoleon Bonaparte; arguably the best general France has ever produced.

Combined with peaceful political situation, the scenic location and congenial climate; Corsica in France has earned its rank among the France tourist attractions. Vacationers find the hundreds of beaches and azure blue water of the Mediterranean Sea exciting enough for a memorable vacation. Araes such as Porto Vecchio, Bonifacio and Calvi are the main tourist hubs on this island. Little wonder that this collection of islands with its capital at Ajaccio is one of the best spots of sightseeing in France.
