The seating arrangement for spectators inside the Roman Amphitheatre (Arenes)
in France comprises of tiered steps arranged in 34 rows. There was a wooden

were supporting joists which were fixed on the walls. These are no more today
but the holes in which they were fixed can still be seen on the walls in the
surrounding areas.
The Roman Amphitheatre (Arenes) in France was converted into a fortress by
the citizens during the Middle Ages. This was done by adding towers and walling
up arcades which originally comprised of three rows. Today the third row does
not exist. Prosper Mérimée restored the area by cleaning up the
arena about 150 years ago. The tower near the entrance can be climbed and once
you reach the top, you can enjoy panoramic views of the Old Town and the ancient
