Located within the Hautes-Pyrenees and Pyrenees-Atlatiques, the Pyrenees National Park in France is one of the most popular National Parks in France. Sightseeing in France should definitely include this national park.
Location:
The Pyrenees National Park in France is located mostly on the central Pyrenees region which shares a border with Spain. One of the frontiers of the park extends up to the Atlantic Ocean. Also, the Grand Randonnee is an excellent place to visit. Besides, the Gavarnie, Cauterets and Gabas are also wonderful places to visit.
Of the other interesting places within the park, the Cirque de Gavarnie deserves special mention. It is a huge circular wall of cliff and overlooks the park. Because of its great height and uniqueness, it has become extremely popular with tourists. You can also visit the Cirque de Troumouse.
Habitat:
The Pyrenees National Park in France has a total of 107 species. Most of these are nocturnal and prefer to keep away from the company of men. 75 species of these animals live in the park. These include ermine, stoat, bear, desman, pine marten, wild boar and fox. Of the remaining species, the hedgehog lives at an altitude of 1400 meters.
Protected Animals:
These include the Isard which is also known as the Pyrenean Chamois. Ever since it was overhunted during the decade of the 1950s, it has come under the protected belt. At present, there are more than 5000 Isards. The protected belt is also shared by the Marmot. Once, it was considered to be the most endangered species, but now their numbers is on the rise.
