The Bois de Boulogne, Paris today is just what has remained of the Rouvray oak forest. The place was given by Childeric II to the Abbey of Saint Dennis who was the founder of a large number of monasteries. Philip Augustus had bought back a main portion of the park from the monks so that they could make it into a royal hunting reserve on the Crown lands. But the place became the haunt of robbers during the Hundred Years War. Later the Duke of Burgundy took over had the place reforested and there were also two roads that went through it.
Napoleon III in 1852 made the site into a lovely park and in the years that followed the park was further beautified. It now has the beautifully manicured lawns, and the lush green areas and woodlands consisting of the chestnut, beech, linden, hornbeam, cedar, and elm trees. There are also the exotic varieties of hardwoods like the redwood trees.
