Arc de Triomphe Paris

The Arc de Triomphe monument was built in Paris in order to commemorate the victories of Napoleon. However, when the arc was finally completed, napoleon was already ousted. The arc gained completion in 1836. The names of the generals who served in the French troop during napoleon's time are inscribed on this historical arch. Thirty shields reside on the top of the arch and each of them bear the name of one of Napoleon's successful battles. The entire monument is 51 meters high.

The design of the Arc de Triomphe was inspired by the design of the Roman Arch of Titus and whatever was the original intention behind building the structure, it is now regarded as the monument that represents and symbolizes peace. The sculpture reflects roman architectural patterns. The base of the monument has four relief sculptures commemorating the Triumph of 1810. You have to walk 234 steps in order to climb to the top of the arch, as there is no elevator to take you to the acme. However, the trouble of climbing the steps is worth it for you get a fascinating view of the entire city once you reach the top.

It was in 1920 that the grave of an anonymous French soldier was given shelter underneath the arch. Also there is a flame that is always kept ablaze, reminding the people of the innumerable lives that were lost during the two world wars. A military parade takes place in this venue, every year, on French National Day. The inside of the arch is a small museum that records the history of the construction of this great monument. The Arc de Triomphe acts a major landmark of Paris and also a major spot of tourist attraction. It is located right in the center of Place Charles de Gaulle and the visitors in Paris usually do not miss out on this marvelous work of art that is also of immense historical significance.
