History of the Place de la Bastille
Place de la Bastille is the site of the original Bastille prison, in which the revolutionaries were kept imprisoned at the time of the French Revolution. During the storming of the Bastille in 1789 the Bastille prison was razed to the ground by Parisians. In 1792, it was proposed to turn the place where the Bastille had once stood into a square celebrating liberty. The foundation was laid at that time but work did not commence till much later. Louis Philippe in 1833 decided to build the July Column commemorating the July Revolution of 1830. The July Column was finally inaugrated in 1840.
