There are several varieties of skating such as Ice skating, Roller skating, skateboarding and snow skating. Ice skating is traveling on ice wearing skates. It is mainly done for the purpose of recreation. Ice-skiing can be done both indoor and outdoor. Roller skating is traveling on plain land with the roller skates on. It is both a form of recreation as well as sport. Roller skating can also be a mode of transportation. Skates are generally available in two varieties, the inline skates and traditional quad skates. The act of rolling on or performing tricks with a skateboard is called skateboarding. a person who does skateboarding is called a skateboarder or skater. Skateboarding can be an art or a hobby or sport or a mode of transportation. Snow skating is traveling on snow riding on a flat skate deck.

Skating is a vastly popular activity in Germany. Most children in Germany have at least one pair of skates. One of the most common leisure activities among the children is to go for skiing. As Berlin has extreme winters the landscape is covered by snow during large part of the year. Children of Germany just love to ski on the flat decks of snow. There are a number of skiing parks of varying size, features and also quality.

The best place for inline-skating is the south of Berlin in the province of Teltow-Fläming. This is the longest skate path in Germany. It stretches as long as 100 kms. The path treads along forests and fields as well as bike paths. One can easily com here by train. There is also a park in Mitte nearby Charlottenstrasse and Krausestrasse which has an extensive track for skiing. Many of Germany's world class skiers have their roots in this park. Skate is therefore a vastly popular sport in Berlin.
