Score is recorded only when a batter runs and touches a series of three raised markers on the ground called bases. The final base is called home plate. Softball is a just another version of baseball, which is sometimes referred to as hardball to distinguish the two. Of course there are some differences as well. A fence running between the baselines defines the limits of the field; this fence is equidistant from home plate at all points. Behind home plate is a backstop.
