Softball is a team game. In this game a ball eleven or twelve inches in circumference is thrown underhand by a player to be hit by another player called a batter. The ball is called pitcher. The circumference of the ball can even be 16 inches. The batter hits the ball with a round, smooth stick called a bat. It is usually made of wood, metal or both. Score is recorded only when a batter runs and touches a series of three raised markers on the ground called bases. The final base is called home plate. Softball is a just another version of baseball, which is sometimes referred to as hardball to distinguish the two. Of course there are some differences as well. Softball is now widely played in Berlin.
The sport's governing body, the International Softball Federation holds world championships, held every four years. Softball is a popular game in Berlin. The interest for this game is on the rise. Young boys and girls are gradually getting attracted to this sport. Schools in Berlin provide Softball courses. So those who are interested can play the game in school itself. The playing field is segregated as fair and foul territory. Fair territory is further divided into the infield, the outfield, and the territory beyond the outfield fence. The field is characterized by foul lines that converge at right angles at the home plate. A fence running between the baselines defines the limits of the field; this fence is equidistant from home plate at all points. Behind home plate is a backstop. It is within 25 and 30 feet (7.62 and 9.14 meters) behind home plate.
