Bauhaus Archive Museum fur Gestaltung

Germany - Cologne - Dusseldorf - Frankfurt - Munich - Stuttgart - Hamburg - Berlin

The Bauhaus Archive/ Museum of Design was established as a tribute to the luminaries of the Bauhaus School who laid the foundation for contemporary design and architecture. The Bauhaus School was founded in 1919 by Walter Gropius who aimed at blending art with fundamentals of everyday functionalities. The principles of the School have now found universal acceptance and manifestations of the same may be seen all over the world.

The Bauhaus Archive/ Museum of Design is the largest of the museums devoted to the field of architecture. Its collection extends to ceramics, metalwork, furniture, and photography.

It was the same Walter Gropius who laid the design for Bauhaus Archiv/Museum fur Gestaltung in Berlin. The most distinct feature of the structure of the Museum is its shinning roof which bears a strong resemblance to the smokestacks of an ocean liner. The building was planned for Darmstadt in 1964 but was built with slight modification in Berlin in 1976-79. The building of the Museum is one of the most famous landmarks of Berlin.

The various objects in the Museum all seem to corroborate the fact that no aspect of modern architecture has escaped the pervasive influence of the Bauhaus School. The extensive collection in the Museum includes items like study notes, models, blue prints, and rare photographs. The most famous of the exhibits includes the model of Gropius' 1925 Bauhaus building in Dessau and a reconstruction of Lázló Moholy-Nagy's kinetic sculpture Light-Space-Modulator. The Chess set designed by Josef Hartwig is also famous among the exhibits. This was donated by Hartwig's daughter to the Museum. The design of the chess set shows a complete departure from the conventional design and reinforces the master's genius.

For those visiting the Museum there is an audio tour available in English, Italian, French, Spanish and German.
