Charlottenburg Palace Berlin

Germany - Cologne - Dusseldorf - Frankfurt - Munich - Stuttgart - Hamburg - Berlin

The Charlottenburg Palace, Berlin is located in the Charlottenburg district of the Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf area in the capital of Germany.

The history of the Charlottenburg Palace, Berlin goes back to 1695 and 1699 when the original, central part was constructed. Later built in various stages at different points of time, the Charlottenburg is the largest palace in Berlin. The palace was originally constructed in the Italian baroque style under the name of Lietzenburg by Sophie Charlotte who was the wife of Frederick III, Elector of Brandenburg. Arnold Nering was the architect for this building which was built as a summer retreat. The east wing, the western palace theater and the small orangery of Carl Gotthard Langhans were built later at various times.

The Charlottenburg Palace, Berlin was badly damaged by allied bombing in 1943 during the World War II. The palace had to be carefully reconstructed after the war. Some valuable things were remarkably well restored like the splendid interiors of Eichengallerie, a 1713 gallery lined with oil paintings and the Porzellan-kabinett, with a fine display of Chinese and Japanese porcelain.

The Charlottenburg Palace, Berlin is now a splendid museum which attracts a lot of visitors who are interested in pre- and early history. The orangery is now a restaurant. The Charlottenburg Palace, Berlin also has a large and beautiful park. It was originally laid out in a French Baroque style. Today, the park is a great place for evening walks and to give yourself the taste of lush greenery and a quiet environment…the park has a mausoleum which is a Doric Temple containing the sarcophagus of Friedrich Wilhelm II among others.

The Charlottenburg Palace, Berlin has always been a great patron for music. Those musical days have been recently restored to a great extent by the series of musical concerts that takes place at the Great Orangery of the palace. Under a soft candlelight, the Berlin palace Orchestra is capable of taking the music lovers to the masterpieces of classical and baroque music.

The Charlottenburg Palace, Berlin was described as "the eighth wonder of the world"….and till today it serves as great source of recorded history…a perfect place to go sightseeing if you are on a trip to Berlin.
