Franzosischer Dom Berlin
Germany - Cologne - Dusseldorf - Frankfurt - Munich - Stuttgart - Hamburg - Berlin
Französischer Dom is the German name for French Cathedral. This is a cathedral located in Berlin on the Gendarmenmarkt and is twin to the Deutscher Dom (German Cathedral).
The Französischer Dom, Berlin is the older of the two cathedrals on the beautiful square in Berlin.
The first parts of the Französischer Dom, Berlin were built during 1701 to 1705 by the Huguenot community. It was modeled after the destroyed Huguenot church in Charenton-Saint-Maurice of France. The Französischer Dom, Berlin was designed by architects Louis Cayard and Abraham Quesnay in order to save the French community. In 1785 Carl Von Gontard modified the cathedral and built the domed tower.
Like almost all other buildings of Berlin, Französischer Dom, Berlin was also greatly destroyed in World War II. It was again re-built during 1977 to 1988.
The cathedral of Französischer Dom, Berlin also has a restaurant and a Huguenot museum inside it.
The Huguenot Museum of the Französischer Dom, Berlin is a representation of the ongoing influence on Berlin by the Huguenots. The Huguenots migrated from France after the revocation of the Edict of Nantes. The picture having Crown Princess Dorothea exclaiming "But he's a refugee!" upon being presented a very valuable set of jewels by Pierre Fromery is one of the most appreciated pieces of artwork in room number nine of the museum. It blows out the vision of the generally agreed-upon view of refugees as poor, without resources creatures and establishes the fact that French Protestants were forced to leave their country because of their religion.
The 55 m tower of the Französischer Dom, Berlin looks very impressive and the bells of the cathedral chime three times a day at 12noon, 3pm and 7pm.
The next door Französische Friedrichstadtkirche is the place where the regular church services take place.
The tower of the Französischer Dom, Berlin operates during 9am to 5pm daily and the museum operates from Wednesday to Saturday between 12noon and 5pm.
