Bamberg Cathedral

Germany - Cologne - Dusseldorf - Frankfurt - Munich - Stuttgart - Hamburg - Berlin
The Bamberg Cathedral is one of the best-known architectural monuments in Bamberg, Germany. Bamberg is a city, located in the south central part of Germany, in Bavaria. It is located on the bank of Regnitz River. This has been Bamberg’s most famous landmark since its completion in the 13th century. The Bamberg church is about 94 m long, 28 m broad and 26 m high. The church has four towers, each of which is about 81 m high. The tower located on the north side is known as the Furstentor or Prince’s doorway. This is the principal entrance.

The cathedral was founded in 1004 by the emperor Henry II and later, finished in 1012. The Bamberg Cathedral was later partially ruined by fire in 1081. Again new cathedral was built by St. Otto of Bamberg and was dedicated in 1111. It was in the 13th century, when Bamberg Cathedral received its present late-Romanesque form.

This cathedral is under the administration of the Roman Catholic Church. The Bamberg Cathedral was built by following the late Romanesque architectural style and has four imposing towers. Among its many works the elegant marble tomb considered the masterpiece of the sculptor Tilman Riemenschneider was made between 1499 and 1513. Tilman Riemenschneider was active in Wurzburg from 1483. He was one of the most versatile sculptors of the transition period between late Gothic and Renaissance. He was a master in stone and lime wood.

Another treasure of the cathedral is a horseman statue known as the Bamberg Horseman. This statue possibly is a portrayal of the Hungarian king Stephen I. This was made between 1225 and 1237. The Bamberg Horseman is a statue, by an unknown medieval sculptor from the Cathedral of Bamberg. It is placed on a cabinet at the north pillar of the St. George choir of the Bamberg Cathedral .
