History has it that the Roman Emperor Fredrick Barbarossa took this treasure from Milan and gave it to the Archbishop of Cologne, Rainald von Dassel, back in 1164 and the cathedral was built mainly to store this priceless treasure.

Beginning in the year 1248, the construction of Cologne Cathedral took a total of 600 years to be completed with many interruptions in between. Finally in 1880, as the construction was completed the event was celebrated in a big way through out the nation and was attended by Emperor Wilhelm I.
