Dusseldorf Overview

Located in the middle of the lower Rhine Basin Dusseldorf is actually located on the east side of the Rhine. Since this city is located on the delta of the Düssel River, Dusseldorf sits on layers of alluvium, muds, sands and clays. Though occasionally found, gravels too constitute the base ground of this city. Situated in the Far East of the city and at 165 meter, the top of Sandberg is the highest point in Dusseldorf. The lowest point in this city is located at the convergence point where river Rhine mingles with the city. With an average altitude of only 28 meter the area is known as Wittlaer borough.

The history of Dusseldorf dates back to the Roman times. Repelling the repeated Roman invasion a handful Germanic tribes maintained their independence at this marshy location. However the settlements from which Dusseldorf grew were in fact old fishing and settlements. These settlements in the 7th and 8th centuries were located at the confluence of river Düssel and the mighty Rhine. However first written historical record of Dusseldorf was found dated to 1135 A.D. This town came under the Berg rule in 1186 and in the year 1280, the count of Berg made this city as the centre point of the rule. Dusseldorf however first gained the city right on 14 August, 1288 with the independent Berg count Adolf V having transformed this town to a city. Much have changed since then and in 1946, this city became the capital of the federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia.

Dusseldorf in modern times has become a major hub of advertising and fashion industry. All the latest fashion trends originate first in this city before encroaching on to other German cities. However this city is now considered as the top telecommunication centre in Germany. With more than 18 internet providers and some of the biggest mobile connection networks like D2 Vodafone and E-Plus based in this city, this city in Germany has advanced in leaps and bounds.

Culture wise too this city has a long tradition in arts. The city abounds in sight seeing places. Some of the biggest attractions in this city are: Aquazoo-Löbbecke-Museum, Filmmuseum (cinema museum), Goethe-Museum and Mahn- und Gedenkstätte, Düsseldorf.
