The Hoppeditz Awakes Dusseldorf

Germany - Cologne - Dusseldorf - Frankfurt - Munich - Stuttgart - Hamburg - Berlin

Dusseldorf is a major city in Germany, and is home to the country’s advertising and fashion fraternity. Located on the eastern side of the famous Rhine River, Dusseldorf is also a favored business center, with a stupendously high number of financial institutions calling this city its home. However, the real event which provides a welcome break from the boring world of finance and business is The Hoppeditz Awakes, Dusseldorf. This may safely be termed as the biggest carnival event in the whole country, and has over time, gained international fame.

The entire city turns into a mad, mad world during the month of November, when more than 6000 revelers cheer constantly as they wait for the Hoppeditz, in front of Dusseldorf’s city hall. Actually, the Hoppeditz is represented in the form of a jester, who in turn symbolizes the fun and cheer that characterizes the city’s population. As the Hoppeditz arrives, cheered by thousands of followers, he begins to discuss the previous year’s notable events in a highly sarcastic manner. The audience has great fun at his speeches which are full of wit and a somewhat black humor. The whole atmosphere is further heightened by the presence of free-flowing locally brewed beer.

The colorful costumes, along with people dancing and reveling on the streets is the real experience of a lifetime. Many foreigners also join in the festivities. As the Hoppeditz continues his sarcasm against the authorities, the local Mayor is also allowed to make a speech in defense. All over the streets, one can notice streamers and confetti, which add to the colorful atmosphere as well. However, since it may be freezing cold outside on the streets, visitors are advised to head for the numerous pubs in the city, which are packed with revelers, and have a warm and jolly time. Overall, this is an event that is not to be missed at any cost.
