Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen, Dusseldorf is one of the major art galleries of the city. The art gallery began operating in the year 1960, when it bought 88 works of Paul Klee. The gallery comprises of two houses, the K 20 dedicated to 20th century arts and the K21 for 21st century arts. Initially the gallery was located in the small castle Schloss Jägerhof in the Hofgarten or the central park of Dusseldorf. But then the place proved to be too small for the gallery and so the collection of the gallery was shifted to a new building at the Grabbeplatz. The new building opened its door to the public in the year 1986 and after four years the collection was shifted to another building, the Ständehaus. 1990 also saw the change of the post of director of the gallery from Werner Schmalenbach to Armin Zweite. As a director, the former was more inclined towards drawing and later was interested in collecting work on sculptures, installations and photo picture arts.
K20 houses the collection of the 20 the century artists with special focus on classical modern art. You can see here works of art starting from 20th century and includes works pertaining to Fauvism, Expressionism, Pittura Metafisica, Cubism Dadaism and Surrealism. The gallery is home to over 100 works of Paul Klee and also boasts works of US-American artists including Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko and Andy Warhol. K21 features works of artists of late 20th and 21st century beginning from 1980s. Here you can see works of Marcel Broodthaers and Nam June Paik. If you love photographs, then you can visit the place. K21 provides you the opportunity of witnessing photographs of Andreas Gursky, Candida Höfer, Thomas Ruff, Thomas Struth and Jeff Wall.
Besides these, Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen also boasts of an extensive library. The library of the gallery feature 100,000 books, magazines, catalogues, bulletins, videos and Cds.
