Duddeldorf is a city in West Germany. It is the capital city of the German Federal State of North Rhine-Westphalia. Together with Cologne and the Ruhr Area Dusseldorf is the economic center of Western Germany. The first written mention of the town of Dusseldorf dates back to 1135. It was then called Dusseldorp. Dusseldorf lies in between the lower Rhine basin on the delta of the Dussel River where it flows into the Rhine. The city is on the eastern side of the Rhine. Across the Rhine Neuss was built the delta of the Erft River. Dusseldorf is situated southwest of the Ruhr mining district, and in the middle of the Rhine-Ruhr urbanized region.
