The museum first opened its door to the public in 1984; it is housed in an enthralling nineteenth century villa. The villa which houses the museum boasts of an unusual design, which further reflects the concept of the museum. The building was designed by celebrated architect Oswald Mathias Ungers. He hollowed out the old neo-classical building to create a 'house within a house'. All the exhibits of the museum are spread out over many different levels; exhibits in the building include of ancient and new building plans and models.
While visiting the National Museum of Architecture, do not forget to see the rotating exhibitions on classic architects like Ludwig Mies Van der Rohe or Walter Gropius. On the top floor of the museum is a mesmerizing permanent exhibition, which is entitled 'From the caveman's hut to the skyscraper'.
