Dom Museum Frankfurt

Dom-Museum, Frankfurt is situated in the cloisters of the enthralling Cathedral of St. Bartholomew. It first opened its doors to the public in 1987 and the museum provides information about the history of the cathedral and also offers you the rare opportunity to have a glimpse of the church treasures. The top exhibits of the museum include the grave of a 7th century Moravian girl, silver and gold altar utensils and vestments. Cathedral of St. Bartholomew boasts of an illustrious history. The cathedral played a significant role in the city, the holy Roman emperors were selected here and the coronation ceremony was also held here from16th to the 18th century. This is why the cathedral is also referred as the Imperial Cathedral.

St. Bartholomew church was built in between 13th and 15th centuries and it has survived many wars and battles, including the Second World War. In fact the treasures of the cathedral are still intact and people from all over the country visit the church to have a look at them. During your visit to the museum you can see many exhibits that will enthrall you, including original Gothic carvings like a life-size Crucifixion group and the fine 15th-century Maria-Schlaf. The tall, red sandstone tower of the cathedral, which was added in between1415 and 1514, is also another major crowd puller. Before the advent of the skyscrapers, the tower used to be the tallest building of structure in Frankfurt. Excavations in 1953 near the main entrance of the cathedral revealed remains of a Roman settlement and the foundations of a Carolingian imperial palace. Thus Dom-Museum emerges as an important museum in Frankfurt, displaying some of the rare exhibits of the history of the country.
