Goethe Haus & Goethemuseum Frankfurt

Goethe, who was born in 1749, is considered to be the greatest poet of Germany. In order to commemorate his contribution to literature in Germany, his residence in Frankfurt has been transformed into a museum. Goethe-Haus & Goethemuseum, Frankfurt has become one of the major tourist attractions of the city, attracting people from all over the world. Goethe’s house in Frankfurt is his birth place and he lived in this hose up to 1775, before shifting to Weimar in 1775, a decision which many Frankfurters found hard to forgive. Goethe wrote many of his celebrated works in this house; some of his works that were written here are ode to suicide, “The Sorrows of Young Werther” and it is in this house that he began working on Faust.

Generally Goethe is associated with Weimar, but then the residents of Frankfurt consider Goethe as their native son. In fact the museum itself encapsulates the pride of the city and also conveys the city’s tribute to him. Goethe’s residence was destroyed due to Allied bombing, but then later the building was rebuilt and restored in every detail. Goethe-Haus & Goethemuseum houses many original pieces that belonged to his family, which include manuscripts written by Goethe himself. The museum located in the house contains works of art that inspired Goethe and also works written by his literary contemporaries. There is also a separate section in the museum, which portray the various stations of Goethe’s long life with paintings from the late Baroque to the Biedermeier periods. The top floor of the house is also home to Goethe's original writing desk and his personal library

Besides informing you about Goethe and his works, Goethe-Haus & Goethemuseum in Frankfurt will also offer you a glimpse of 18th-century domestic life. The museum is open from Monday to Sunday, from 10 am to 6 pm. On Sunday the museum is closed at 5.30 pm.
