Naturmuseum Senckenberg is one of the largest museums of the city as well as the country. The museum originated a foundation, which was set up in 1763 by a local doctor Johann Christian Senckenberg. Since the museum is dedicated to education and scientific research, therefore a large part of the collection include fossils and other objects from the Palaeozoic period to the Stone Age. Apart from this, the museum also houses special collections that focus on the history of life on earth. Some of the exhibits of the museum are renowned worldwide, for example the large free-standing animal skeletons are extremely rare and they enjoy a lot of popularity especially with the children.
The top exhibit of the Naturmuseum Senckenberg has to be the complete replica of a diplodocus skeleton, which is the only extant one in Europe. There are also other dinosaur skeletons in the museum that include skeletons of T Rex, stegosaurus, triceratops, iguanodon and many more. Other popular exhibits of the museum are Egyptian mummies, rocks and meteorites, evolution, marine life, and insect life.
Naturmuseum Senckenberg is open on all days of the week and the charge of admission for entering the museum is EUR5 and one can avail concessions up to EUR1,50.
