Erfurt is a small city in the central Germany and the capital of Thuringia. There are two beautiful charges that serve as the landmark of Erfurt. These churches are the Mariendom and the Severikirche. The two towering cathedrals look wonderful in the nighttime. There are plenty of other churches and monasteries as well in Erfurt and the place has rightly been called the center of German Religion and Learning. This small city is also famous for having played an important role in the life of Martin Luther. The city was probably established in 742 AD.
Interesting features:
- Erfurt has a wonderful Medieval City Center with old and aristocratic townhouses and half-timbered buildings. The bridge was built over the Gero River in 1325 still exists covered with inhabited buildings and is truly a queer spectacle. There used to be two churches at the two ends of the bridge of which now only one exists.
- The city has served as the birthplace and residence of many famous personalities. Martin Luther had lived here as a monk from 1505 to 1511 and had also acquired his bachelor’s degree and master’s degree from University of Erfurt. The Lutherian landmark includes the Augustinian Monastery. Also, the composer Richard Wetz had lived in the city and had immensely influenced the Erfurt’s musical life. The place has also been the birthplace of the Johann Bernhard Bach and also of the famous sociologist Max Weber.
