The Laboe Naval Memorial, Germany is situated in the vicinity of Kiel, in Schleswig-Holstein in northern Germany. Completed in the year 1936, the Naval Memorial at Laboe was a cenotaph for the martyrs of the Imperial German Navy of WWI (1914 - 1918). However, since WWII (1939 - 1945), the Naval Memorial commemorates the sailors of all nationalities. At a height of 85 m, the tower marks the naval warfare in German history. The construction of the Laboe Naval Memorial, Germany began in the year 1929, based on a former coastal defense position. Partly underneath it, a large hall narrates the saga of the naval warfare that concluded in 1934. In 1952, the Laboe Naval Memorial came to commemorate every fallen person on sea. It is a monument commemorating fallen soldiers both in the merchant and in war. This is clearly visualized in the hall of the Naval Memorial which houses wreaths from all over the world. Conveniently located at the Baltic Sea, every ship passing the Nordsea comes across the memorial. Nearby, the U-995 can be found. The site can be visited early in a day, for they are adjacent to each other. From a distance, the red brick tower of the Laboe Naval Memorial is clearly visible. The Laboe Naval Memorial tower contains exhibits of paintings as well as every flag that was used b the German Navy since 1657. The bell to its right hangs in the tower. Using the stairs, you can visit the balcony of the Naval Memorial. It gives a nice view of the area around Laboe, including the Kieler Forde, the bay that leads to Kiel. The Laboe Naval Memorial was loitered and confiscated after the end of WWII by the Allied Forces, for it was a reminder of the Third Reich. It was renovated in 1995.
