Hamburger Dom

Germany - Cologne - Dusseldorf - Frankfurt - Munich - Stuttgart - Hamburg - Berlin
Hamburger Dom is the biggest fair not only in Hamburg, but in the whole of Northern Germany. Popular as the fair is, it is held thrice in a year- in the months of April, August and November. Hamburger Dom comprises roller coasters, thrill rides and eating stalls with sumptuous food.

The name of the fair is derived from ‘Dom’ which was once Hamburg’s main church. In olden days the church’s name was lent to the frequent trade market in the area. This trade market was held on more than few occasions in the area and the one which coincided with Christmas was especially popular. The market was usually followed by long processions full of revelry and celebration.

The bringing down of the Dom Church in 1804 did nothing to fade the popularity of the market; in fact the coming years added to the popularity of the market and soon buoyed by increasing popularity, it took the form of a fair.

Heiligengeistfeld has been the site for Dom fair since 1982. The name ‘Dom’ has acquired a generic usage, in the sense all the three fairs that take place in the ground share the name- the three fairs being Frühlingsmarkt or Spring Fair, Hummelfest (held in midsummer) and Dommarket (held in November/December).

Hamburger Dom exceeds all the bounds of popularity as it receives over nine million visitors every year. The entry to these fairs is free and visitor can expect nothing less than a month of hard partying; in between parties you can experience riding the Power Tower, which is considered to be world’s biggest Ferris wheel.

One of the best things about Hamburger Dom is that everything in the fair comes cheap in the fair; where else can u expect to get a glass of wine and pizza for 12 $.
