Harbour Birthday Fest is held between 11 and 13 May 2007. The festivities that mark the occasion outstrip all the other harbor celebrations around the world in terms of its grandness. Harbour Birthday Fest explores all avenues of entertainment with celebration taking place on air, water and land. The festival extends from Baumwell to Altona Fish Market and the entire stretch, also called the ‘colorful mile’, is dotted with stalls offering mouth-water delights. The program of Harbour Birthday Fest may be divided into three divisions- Aquatic Events, Land Events and Aerial Events. Aquatic Events are marked by celebrations like a long parade of tall ships- both traditional and sports along the harbour. Also seen on the occasion are tugboat ballet, Dragon Boat Racing and Harbour illuminations. The Land Events include an inaugural church service, craft fair and lotto action zone. There are museum exhibitions and other interesting games for the children. The Air Events come packed with Hot-Air balloon rides, helicopter tours, parachuting, helicopter rescue operations and many more. Hamburg Harbour’s history goes back as early as the formation of the city itself. It was in 1189 that Frederick I, impressive by the its vantage point, chose it as a harbor. The Harbour soon grew into an important harbor in Central Europe. Hamburg Harbour is also known as Germany’s Gateway to the World and is the largest sea-port in Germany. The Port’s importance increased in the latter half of the 19th century when Hamburg was the most favored destination for the transatlantic passenger and freight travel. Hamburg port spreads over 73.99 sq. km out of which 43.31 sq. km is a land area. The extensive free port in Hamburg goes very well with the freight ships since it means toll-free shipping.
