The Kunsthalle Hamburg is an art museum that is located in the city of Hamburg Germany, and it is made of three interlinked buildings the first of which was built in the later half of the nineteenth century by a couple of architects named Georg Theodor Schirrmacher and Herman von Der Hude.
This place is a must see for art lovers and is considered one of the most important museum for paintings and art as it houses more than three thousand paintings and nearly four hundred sculptures. Many masters of the modern era like Andy Warhol, David Hockney and Horst Janssen have their works displayed in this place.
The place also consists quite a few collections from the Middle Ages too with the earliest being from the religious backgrounds. It also has large sections dedicated to romantic works and the museum also contains master pieces from 17th century Dutch masters.
There is also a separate section dedicated to Subjectivity and Modern Art and the museum also contains portraits of great artists like Picasso, Derain, Rouault and Delaunay.
The museum has had a controversial expansion with the Gallerie der Gegenwart in 1960 which houses some collections of New Postmodernist art. The museum is also known for its modernistic outlook and has been very modern in its approach.
The museum has had a set back from time to time and at one point of time about seventy four paintings and nearly twelve hundred drawings and graphic works were lost.
However the museum has been able to take such losses in the stride and it has been able to build up an enviable collection making it one of the best museums of art in the whole of Germany.
So if you are in Hamburg and if you have the time to see the city then the art museum should be on your priority list.
