The Erotic Museum of Hamburg is situated in St Pauli and it was founded in
1992 and is located in an old warehouse. It has permanent as well as temporary
exhibitions and has over hundreds of exhibits which are erotic in nature; these
include erotic pictures, objects, prints and other collections which date back
to the sixteenth century.
The museum has about eighteen hundred original works and the way that the artifacts
and exhibits are preserved have won the accolades of the art conscious people.
Special photography and events related to erotic culture are also showcased
in this place from time to time.
Eroticism has always been a repressed desire for many something which everyone
would vouch for but will not come out in the open to admit the sexuality part.
The repressed desire and its fulfillment has always restricted to a few people
until it was brought out in the open by the initiator Claus Becker, a real estate
developer who developed a huge collection of erotic art because he wanted to
give proper respect to the art that he felt was neglected for a long time.
The museum of erotica in Hamburg is much the same on the lines of the other
museums dedicated to sex and erotica that the continent of Europe is famous
for. This is very different from say the continent of America where sex seems
to be associated only with Presidents. The one not so good thing about the museum
is the fact that the descriptions are only in German and if you don't know the
language chances are there that you will be missing out on essential fun.
The number of people visiting the museum is increasing like anything and the
more than ninety thousand people queue up every year to see the wonderful exhibits.
The promoter of the museum plans to open a similar museum in some other part
of Eastern Europe or Russia, till then Hamburg can rule the roost.
