The museum for communication or Kommunikation as it is known in German is located
in a beautiful building near the opera house, the building in which it is housed
is more than hundred years old. The museum of communication generally deals
with postal services and operations in the whole of Germany in general and Hamburg
in particular.
The first collection that came to the museum was way back in the 1937 and one
of the major attractions of the communication museum remains the post office
counter of the 1900. The museum has an enormous compound which consists of tones
of open ground and it caters to a wide audience and permanent as well temporary
exhibits to keep things rolling and involve greater audience participation.
For the above mentioned purpose the museum conducts lectures, guided tours,
films, museum festivals etc.
The permanent exhibition provides an opportunity to the patrons to understand
the process and technology that goes on to explain things related to tele-communication,
telegraphy and maritime radio. The museum also goes on to explain the way mails
were transported to places by ship, rail, and air. The museum is very flexible
and it even allows children to celebrate their birthdays along with having unique
experiences of riding a postman's carriage.
The museum tries to look into the evolution of communication right from the
days of post boxes, uniforms; telephones till the day the world become a wired
world.
The museum generally caters to a wide variety of audience with special reference
to families with children, school students, and research scholars who want to
study the subject of communication. People can learn a lot of things in a playful
mode and they can also acquire loads of knowledge because the museum is very
informative. At a participatory level the visitors can also take part in various
activities to know the process of communication.
