The Museum for Decorative Arts and Crafts was founded way back in the latter
half of the nineteenth century. The museum was the brainchild of a young lawyer
and art critic Justus Brinkman.
Brinkman wanted to show the works of the craftsmen from Hamburg along with
spreading awareness of art among the local populace. However the collections
have undergone a rapid expansion, especially in the last twenty years the museum
has received loads of donations from a lot of private collectors.
It has a six storey high Schumann wing in the south patio and the museum is
famous for its exhibits which include artistic crafts work, industrial design,
photography, and there are even exhibits of interior design material.
The museum is also a melting point of different culture as it contains exhibits
covering a lot of countries including European, Islamic as well as Eastern cultures.
The museum contains elaborate sculptures, ivory crafts, porcelain treasures,
furniture, and gold ornaments that can make any one stand and admire. Ceramics,
Bronze, paintings and enamel arts form an important part of the collection belonging
to far eastern as well as Egyptian and Islamic art.The museum also provides
a good explanation of the beginning of western culture and the importance of
middle ages.
Musical instruments along with the huge collections of textiles make it an
importance place to visit. The museum is open on all days except on a Monday
and people generally flock in huge numbers to visit the museum which is one
of the best in the region in terms of art and culture.
The place is well connected so people don't have a problem accessing the place
and enjoy the artistic marvels that are in place. This is one place which you
should visit once you are in the German city of Hamburg.
