Rathaus, a gigantic city hall, was completed in 1897. The old building built in the northern Renassiance style is the masterpiece of seven arctictural brains under the guidance of Martin Haller. The 112 meter tower required a large number of craftsmen from all over Europe.
Rathaus, Hamburg is a symbol of wealth and pride of the people of Hamburg. The ornate along the frontals is a reflection of the economic prosperity of the city. Due to a swampy ground 4000 oak trees had to be pulled down to stabilize the building. The ornate frontals include the statues of about a score of Kaizers and some astonishing sculptures and works of great artistry.
The Rathaus comprise of 647 rooms which is much greater than the Buckingham Palace. The town hall is the seat of the State government and the State Parliament. It houses the office of the First Mayor and rooms for the political parties. There a re some splendid halls which is used for representative purposes. The banquet hall represents the size of a divided soccer field. It is 46 meters long and has 3 chandeliers each weighing more than a ton. The walls are adorned with paintings depicting the history of Hamburg from the 9th Century to the 20th Century.
The frontage of the Rathaus has a large open space where markets and large outdoor cinemas are set up during the tourist season which draws a large number of visitors every day. The surrounding areas have large number of designer stores which provides a high grade of shopping opportunities for the visitors.
Rathaus Hamburg, situated in the heart of the city can be viewed from any corner due to high elevation. Tourists can explore the Rathaus on paying an admission fee of 1.50 / 0.50 Euros. It is open for tourists between 10.00 am and 3.15 pm from Monday to Thursday. It remains closed to the visitors during the official events.
