INTRODUCTION:
St Jacobi Kirche, Hamburg, with a 125 meter high tower is one of the five main churches in Hamburg. This remarkable church is known for its old treasures that include the most remarkable famous organ created in 1693. Since 1993, this organ is being played regularly in every Sunday service. This uniquely baroque styled organ is the largest in Europe with 60 stops and about 4,000 pipes.

St. Jacobi is a pilgrimage place for professionals from all parts of the world. Concerts are regularly performed and those interested to learn its techniques are offered a weekly tour. St Jacobi was a host of an international symposium on north German organ and figural music of the 17th century in 1995.

St Jacobi Kirche, Hamburg had its first mention in the year 1255. With the expansion of the city of Stadtmauer in 1260, it was included into the Hamburg city. The church was completely rebuilt in the north German Gothic style from 1350 to 1400. The second spire of the church was constructed in 1826 – 1827 when the first spire damaged. The second World War rummaged the Jacobi Kirche, Hamburg. However it was rebuilt in the medieval style with the same interiors which was luckily saved. The dome of the church tower were reconstructed after a faulty construction in the 1960’s.

St Jacobi Kirche, Hamburg has three medieval altar-pieces. The Altar of the Holy Trinity built in 1518, the Altar of St. Peter built in 1508 and the Altar of St. Luke being transferred from Hamburg’s St. Mary’s Cathedral. The wings of the altars are opened and their treasures are displayed only on Special Sundays, Church Festivals and feasts of the saint. The visitors can have a view of the outdoor paintings during their visit on normal days.

At St Jacobi Kirche, Hamburg, regular services are held every Sunday at 10.00 am. Vespers are celebrated on Thursday night with Gregorian chant and hymns and liturgical dance. Midday services are held every Tuesday with biblical readings. These services are attended by 100 – 500 people.

Another feature of St. Jacobi Kirche is its renowned Tower Café which is open for the tourists on every first Saturday of the month from May till October. The café organized by the members of the congregation gives a panoramic view of the Hamburg.

St. Jacobi, Kirche is opened for the tourists between 10.00 am and 5.00 pm from Monday to Saturday. Guided tours are conducted in German except the first Thursday of the month when it is done in English.
