Munich Blade Night

The “Munich Blade-Night” most probably is the biggest inline skating event of the world. The average number of participants runs in thousands of people, totaling to much more than one million skaters since 1999 and some tens of millions kilometers skated. Munich Blade-Nights” traditionally takes place on every Monday from May to 2 week before the beginning of the world famous Munich beer festival, the Oktoberfest in September. The opening hour is generally 9.00 A.M. you don’t need any entry fee to join the race.

The organisers have established six routes in different parts of the city which includes Northern Route, Southern Route, Western Route, Eastern Route, Family Route, and ISPO Route. All skates begin and end on Sophienstrasse, the street on the edge of the Alter Botanischer Garten just north of the main station. On some nights, over 25,000 skaters have been known to join in.
Mass evening skates have become popular in Germany in the past few years, and now the Bavarian capital has one of its own. While those in some cities go forward whatever the weather, poor weather sometimes leads to the cancellation of Munich's event, but the website and SMS (text message) service aim to keep skaters up-to-the-minute.

Of course, the attractions of the Munich skate include not only the beautiful streets of the city but also the prospect of a beer garden at the end of the night's run - there's one in the Alter Botanischer Garten, or cross Karlsplatz and skate down the pedestrianised Neuhauserstrasse to the Augustiner.

Follow the instructions of the Munich Blade guards, Stay on the road during the Blade night, Stay patient if the treck stops, keep your cool, carry water so that you don’t get dehydrated, don’t drink and skate, keep yourself visible, don’t exert yourself, keep a checklist before skating.
