Opera Festival Munich

The Munich Opera Festival is an opera festival located in Munich, Germany and presented annually at the National Theatre (Munich) by the Bavarian State Opera. The Bavarian State Opera presents several seasons of opera festivals throughout the year. Held every summer since 1876, the Munich Opera Festival features a vast programme of opera and ballet performances, spread over 35 days. The Opera festival takes place in June- July and the timings are flexible. The cost also varies.

One of the highlights of the Summer Festival is "Opera for All" a full-length production transmitted live from the National Theatre to outdoor Max Joseph-Platz.

Munich's opera history began in 1651 and since then the elegant city has seen many first-time-ever performances, with Mozart, Wagner and Strauss operas among them. These composers are referred to as the "three house gods" and make up for a great proportion of today's program. With the advent of director Peter Jonas, however, there was a slight shift towards contemporary and baroque opera. Festival performances take place mainly in the National Theatre and the Residenztheater, renowned for its Rococo interior. The festival program includes a wide range of performances, works by Mozart, Verdi, Donizetti, Wagner, Cavalli, Beethoven, Strauss and others. The festival programme is also enriched by a number of ballet performances.

The Opera Festival has been enthralling music lovers from all over the world since long. Audiences are treated to an eclectic repertoire of operas, including several premières, as well as a number of other musical offerings.

During the month of the opera festival, Munich welcomes around 80,000 music lovers, who come to the city to appreciate the diverse musical programme in a number of venues.
